CAMERON BAGPIPES

Reed Protection

reedsAs well as the advantages of Cameron joints, pipes which are being converted can further benefit from our latest development - Cameron Reed Protection.

Every piper will have experienced the frustration of finding a reed which really performs well and then damaging it when refitting the chanter. Cameron Reed Protectors dramatically reduce the incidence of this type of damage.

We are able to offer two stages of reed protection:-

  • First, a tuning fork shaped extension to the chanter joint (shown left in the illustration), which extends up the sides of the reed and thus protects it from accidental damage
    .
  • Second, a tube which fits into the fork shaped extension (shown right), completely surrounding the reed, and thus improving still further the protection offered.

Neither stages of reed protection affects the tone of the pipes, although some pipers think that they are able to detect a very small increase in volume from the tubular protector, caused by a reduction in the internal volume of the reed chamber.

Once fitted to your pipes the use of the tubular protector is entirely optional as it can be removed and replaced without affecting the first stage protection. The first stage protector forms part of the joint although, in the unlikely event that it is no longer required, the extensions could easily be removed.

Only pipes which are being converted to Cameron Joints are able to use our reed protectors and the additional cost is GB£20 per set which includes both stages of protection.
