CAMERON BAGPIPES

Background Information

lochaberLochaberGaelic
Cameron bagpipes are made in the tiny and ancient crofting township of Arivegaig on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, at the border of Lochaber and Argyll

Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point of the Scottish mainland. Swept by winds and rain from the Atlantic ocean, the area is wild and rugged, but the passing waters of the Gulf Stream give it a gentle warmth which is reflected in the temperament of the people.

Gaelic is spoken in the community, by members of all ages and many of the local school children receive their entire education in Gaelic. This is a successful initiative by The Highland Council to help regenerate the area's traditional culture.

Dugald Cameron's bagpipe manufacturing business is located on his croft which has been in the Cameron family for four generations. Assisted by his sons John and Sandy, he has built two substantial workshops where the entire process of making bagpipes to their own, unique, design is carried out. Their operations range from locating and felling suitable oak for seasoning, through turning and machining all parts, to the assembly, testing and shipping of the finished instruments. Cameron Bagpipes are one of the very few Scottish bagpipe manufacturers actually located in the Highlands, and are probably the only bagpipe manufacturer in the world which controls the whole process from felling the timber through to completing and selling the finished instrument.
